DigitalOcean vs Linode: choosing between two very similar clouds
These two are closer to each other than any other pair worth comparing. The differences are small, specific, and occasionally decisive.
Every other comparison in this series involves platforms with genuinely different philosophies. This one does not. DigitalOcean and Linode have spent fifteen years converging on the same product for the same customer, and most of the time either will do the job.
Which makes the small differences worth listing precisely, because they are all you have to go on.
What is effectively identical
Flat monthly pricing with an hourly cap. Shared and dedicated CPU plan families. Managed Kubernetes where you pay for worker nodes. S3 compatible object storage. Managed PostgreSQL and MySQL. Block storage volumes. Load balancers at a flat rate. Private networking with free internal traffic. A transfer pool shared across the account. Outbound SMTP blocked on new accounts and lifted on request. Documentation that is genuinely better than the hyperscalers publish.
If your requirement is a few Linux servers, a managed database and object storage, the two platforms will produce the same result with the same effort.
Where DigitalOcean is ahead
The tutorial library. DigitalOcean’s community documentation is the largest of its kind and covers far more than its own products. Search almost any Linux configuration question and one of the top results is theirs.
App Platform. A managed deployment layer for containers and static sites, aimed at teams who want a platform experience rather than a server. Linode has no direct equivalent of the same maturity.
Marketplace images. A broader catalogue of one click application images.
Ecosystem familiarity. More tutorials, more community projects, more people who have used it.
Where Linode is ahead
Network footprint. Since the Akamai acquisition, the location list has expanded well beyond what DigitalOcean offers, and it sits behind one of the largest delivery networks in existence. For latency sensitive or jurisdiction sensitive workloads this is the clearest difference between the two.
Dedicated CPU value. Linode’s dedicated plans have historically been competitively priced against the equivalent, and the premium plan tier gives you a guaranteed processor generation.
Support reputation. Linode’s ticket support has a long standing reputation for technical depth. Both are good; Linode is the one people mention unprompted.
Included networking features. VPC and cloud firewall are provided without additional charge.
The account level settings that matter
Both providers apply two limits at the account level rather than the plan level, and both decide what you can actually build:
- Instance limit. DigitalOcean caps droplets per account; Linode caps instances similarly. New accounts start low and increases are granted on request. Kubernetes worker nodes count against the same limit, which catches people planning a cluster.
- Outbound SMTP. Blocked by default on both, lifted on request. If mail delivery matters, this is the specification rather than a detail. See outbound port 25 on cloud servers.
How to decide
- Where are your users? Check both location lists against your traffic. This decides more cases than anything else.
- Do you want to manage servers or deploy applications? If the latter, App Platform tilts it to DigitalOcean.
- Is the workload CPU sensitive? Compare dedicated plan pricing at the exact shape you need rather than at the entry rung.
- Do you need outbound mail? Confirm the account has it before you build around it.

Which has better documentation?
Both are strong, and this is one of the few areas where small providers beat the hyperscalers outright. DigitalOcean's tutorial library is larger; Linode's guides are often more precise.
Do both block outbound SMTP?
Yes. Both restrict outbound mail ports on new accounts and lift the restriction on request once the account is established.
