Hetzner vs DigitalOcean: price against polish

The price difference here is not marginal, and neither is the difference in ecosystem. Which one matters more depends on how much of your own operations you want to run.

Hetzner vs DigitalOcean comparison shown as a rack motif

Hetzner vs DigitalOcean has a straightforward shape. Hetzner is substantially cheaper for equivalent hardware in Europe. DigitalOcean has more services, more locations, more documentation and a friendlier on ramp. Everything else follows from those two facts.

The price gap is structural

Hetzner owns and operates its data centres in locations with cheap power and land, sells a deliberately narrow catalogue, and does not fund a hundred managed services. For comparable CPU and memory, the European pricing is a fraction of most competitors, and it is not a promotional rate.

The bandwidth position widens the gap further. Hetzner includes a large monthly traffic allowance per server, historically twenty terabytes on European locations, with cheap overage. DigitalOcean pools per droplet allowances across the account and bills per gigabyte beyond the pool. For a media or download heavy workload, this alone can be the entire argument. It is covered across providers in data transfer costs.

What DigitalOcean gives you for the difference

Managed services. Managed PostgreSQL, MySQL, Redis compatible caching, MongoDB and Kafka, with backups, failover and version upgrades handled. Hetzner has none of this. If you go to Hetzner, you are running your own database, including the backups and the failover plan.

App Platform. A managed deployment layer for containers and static sites. Push code, get a running service. There is no Hetzner equivalent.

Documentation. DigitalOcean’s tutorial library is one of the best free Linux resources on the internet, and it covers far more than DigitalOcean products. Hetzner’s documentation is adequate and much narrower.

Locations. A wider global spread, particularly in North America and Asia. Hetzner is strongest in Europe by a distance.

Ecosystem. More integrations, more community projects, more people who have solved your problem already.

Where Hetzner is better than its price suggests

The hardware is current and fast. Dedicated vCPU plans have no noisy neighbour behaviour. The Arm based plans are excellent value for workloads that run on ARM64, which today covers most Linux software. The API and Terraform provider are complete. Private networking, firewalls and load balancers are all present.

Hetzner also sells dedicated root servers, including an auction market for older hardware, which has no equivalent at DigitalOcean and is remarkable value if you can work with fixed specifications.

The account level differences

Both apply limits at the account level rather than the plan level:

  • Server limits. Hetzner caps concurrent cloud servers per account; DigitalOcean caps droplets. Both start low on new accounts and rise on request. Kubernetes nodes count against both.
  • Outbound SMTP. Blocked by default on both, lifted on request. See outbound port 25 on cloud servers.

Hetzner vs DigitalOcean: choosing

Choose Hetzner if your users are in Europe, if you have real bandwidth requirements, if your team is comfortable running its own database, or if the workload is large enough that the price difference funds an engineer.

Choose DigitalOcean if you want managed databases, if you are deploying applications rather than administering servers, if your users are outside Europe, or if the team’s time is worth more than the monthly difference.

Use both if that is honest. Running a warm standby at Hetzner is cheap enough that plenty of teams do exactly this, and having a second provider is the only real answer to a regional outage.

The individual guides are Hetzner Cloud and DigitalOcean droplets explained. For the other European operator at Hetzner’s scale, see Hetzner vs OVHcloud.

Common questions

Is Hetzner really that much cheaper than DigitalOcean?

For comparable specifications in Europe, yes, and the gap is large rather than marginal. It comes from owning the data centres, operating in low cost locations and selling a narrow product range.

Is Hetzner reliable enough for production?

It runs a great deal of production infrastructure. The trade is not reliability, it is the size of the managed service catalogue, the regional footprint outside Europe and the depth of the support relationship.

Which is better for a team without a systems administrator?

DigitalOcean, comfortably. The managed services, the tutorial library and the App Platform reduce the amount of infrastructure knowledge you need to have.
