Azure vs Google Cloud: two very different second choices
These two rarely end up on the same shortlist by accident. One wins on organisational fit, the other on engineering fit, and that framing settles most decisions.
Very few teams shortlist Azure and Google Cloud against each other for the same reason. Azure gets on the list because of what the organisation already has; Google Cloud gets on it because of what the engineers want to build. That framing is crude and it predicts the outcome surprisingly well.
The organisational case for Azure
Identity. Microsoft Entra ID is already the identity system in a large share of companies. On Azure, that is the platform’s own identity layer rather than something you federate into. Single sign on, conditional access and group based permissions carry across without an integration project.
Licensing. Azure Hybrid Benefit removes the Windows Server and SQL Server licence component from virtual machine rates if you already own eligible licences. On a Windows estate this frequently dominates every other cost consideration.
Procurement. If there is an existing enterprise agreement with Microsoft, adding Azure to it is a smaller process than opening a new vendor relationship. This is not a technical argument and it is often the decisive one.
Hybrid. Azure Arc and the on premises tooling assume you have infrastructure that is not moving, which reflects most large organisations more honestly than a cloud native pitch does.
The engineering case for Google Cloud
Kubernetes. GKE is widely held to be the most refined managed Kubernetes, which is unsurprising given where the project originated. Autoscaling, node management and upgrades require less babysitting than the alternatives.
Analytics. BigQuery is serverless, fast on large datasets and priced on what you scan rather than on a cluster you keep alive. Teams doing genuine analytical work often pick the platform for this product alone.
Automatic discounts. Sustained use discounts apply without a commitment, and billing is per second after a one minute minimum. A team with no cost optimisation programme still pays less than list.
Networking. A global VPC with regional subnets removes the peering work that multi region designs otherwise require.
Custom machine shapes. vCPU and memory set independently, so workloads between standard rungs stop overpaying on both axes.
Where they are close
Compute rates for equivalent shapes are within a few percent. Object storage, managed PostgreSQL and MySQL, serverless functions, message queues, CDN and monitoring all exist on both at comparable quality. Both charge for egress at rates far above the European providers, both include a small monthly allowance, and both have converged on similar security tooling.
Neither has a decisive advantage in raw capability for an ordinary web application. If that is what you are building, the decision should be made on people and process rather than features.
Where each is weaker
Azure. The service naming and portal organisation are inconsistent, with several design eras visible at once. Resource provisioning can be slower, and some services carry the accumulated complexity of a long history. Documentation quality is uneven across services.
Google Cloud. A smaller region footprint than either rival, a smaller service catalogue, and a reputation for retiring products that makes enterprise buyers cautious. The community and third party tooling ecosystem is the smallest of the three.
A short decision path
- Is Microsoft Entra ID your identity provider? If yes, and it is not changing, Azure starts ahead by a wide margin.
- Do you own Windows or SQL Server licences? If yes, run the Hybrid Benefit numbers before anything else.
- Is analytics or Kubernetes the centre of the workload? If yes, Google Cloud earns its place on engineering grounds.
- Is the application genuinely multi region? The global VPC is a real simplification.
- Will anyone own cost optimisation? If not, automatic discounts are worth more than a better rate card you never claim.

GKE is generally considered the more mature managed Kubernetes, with better autoscaling behaviour and upgrade handling. AKS is capable and integrates well with Entra ID, which matters if identity is your constraint.
